Mansoor Khaled Alblooshi

Investment Banking Programme Graduate

After completing my studies in Economics and Politics at Edinburgh University, I knew I wanted to begin my career in a place full of energy, growth, and opportunity. Moving to the UAE was an easy decision for me – it’s an exciting time for the Middle East, as it evolves into a global financial hub bridging East and West. It felt like the perfect place to contribute, learn, and make my mark.

Choosing Economics as a field of study was natural. For me, it represented a blend of the humanities and STEM disciplines, which suited both my personality and my ambitions. It gave me the critical thinking skills and analytical mindset I would later bring into my role at HSBC.

Making real-world change

I first connected with HSBC while at university. Through one of the many student societies I joined, I had the chance to meet current HSBC employees and alumni. They shared their experiences and encouraged me to apply for a career in banking. It was inspiring to see how approachable and supportive they were, and they helped me realise that some of the common misperceptions about banking – whether about the culture or the nature of the work – were far from reality. Their advice stuck with me, and I took the leap.

Since joining HSBC, I’ve been working in the Infrastructure team, focusing on asset finance, direct finance transactions, and other fascinating projects. One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is being able to see the tangible impact of my work. The transactions I help facilitate are not just numbers on a spreadsheet – they’re tied to real-world outcomes, which is both motivating and exciting.

HSBC’s welcoming atmosphere, supportive mentors, and constructive feedback have been instrumental in my personal and professional development.

Learning from the best

One thing I’ve learned in this role is the importance of humility. At HSBC, I’m fortunate to sit alongside some of the most experienced professionals in the industry, including my boss and a vice president. They’re always open to discussions, and I’ve found that by being humble and actively listening, I can learn so much from them. Knowing when to step back and absorb the expertise of those around me has been a critical skill in my professional growth.

The support system at HSBC has been instrumental in my journey. From day one, I’ve been paired with a mentor from the graduate development team, who checks in with me regularly to ensure I’m on the right track. My manager also provides consistent, constructive feedback that helps me refine my skills and grow professionally. This welcoming and collaborative atmosphere is one of the standout aspects of working here, and it’s something I truly value.

Building a great future

Looking ahead, I’m optimistic about the future. I’m eager to branch out into new asset classes and make the most of the network I’ve built here to grow both personally and professionally. That network, which started on my first day, has already proven invaluable in shaping my career.

If I were to offer advice to graduates considering their next steps, I’d say this: be courageous. Take that first step into banking, and choose a place that not only challenges you but also welcomes and supports you. For me, that place has been HSBC – a bank where I’ve found opportunity, growth and a culture that truly stands apart.
