Michael Roberts

CEO of HSBC Bank plc and CEO of Corporate and Institutional Banking

Michael Roberts is CEO of HSBC Bank plc (HBEU) and CEO of Corporate and Institutional Banking. In this role, Michael leads the bank’s newly integrated Commercial Banking and Global Banking businesses that deliver internationally focused solutions for corporate and institutional clients with leading capabilities across trade, payments, markets and corporate finance. He also oversees key geographies in the US, Americas and Europe. He is a member of the Group Operating Committee, which serves as the leading decision-making executive committee of the firm, and an Executive Director of the HBEU Board of Directors. These appointments were effective in January 2025. He also serves as Chairman of HSBC Latin America Holdings (UK) Limited, a position he has held since January 2023.

Previously, Mr Roberts served as President, CEO and Executive Director of HSBC North America Holdings Inc., and Chairman of HSBC Bank USA, N.A., and HSBC USA Inc. He was appointed as CEO, Americas, with oversight responsibility for Canada and Latin America, with effect from April 2021.

Mr Roberts joined HSBC from Citigroup, where he served as Global Head of Corporate Banking and Capital Management and Chief Lending Officer. In these roles, he managed 1,500 bankers across 100 countries, and was responsible for lending to institutional, private banking and retail customers globally. During his 33-year career at Citi, he held various senior leadership roles in the US and abroad, including Head of Global Financial Institutions, Head of Global Automotive and Industrials, CEO of Citibank Canada, and positions in France, Belgium and Türkiye.

Mr Roberts holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Texas, Austin, and a master’s degree in banking and finance from the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs.
