HSBC launches mental health partnership
HSBC is joining forces with a new external partner to champion awareness of mental health in the workplace.
United for Global Mental Health (UGMH) is an organisation that works with international agencies and experts to support and unite the global effort to take action on mental health.
HSBC is backing UGMH's 'Speak Your Mind' campaign, which aims to create a world where everyone has someone to turn to for support with their mental health.
Nuno Matos, CEO, HSBC Mexico, said: “We will never overcome the stigma of mental ill-health unless we are prepared to talk about it. I want everyone to be able to share their mental health experiences without fear or prejudice.”
Mr Matos is one of five senior leaders across HSBC who have volunteered to raise awareness of mental health and champion change. The heads of the bank’s Global Private Banking, Global Banking, Hong Kong and India businesses are also helping to drive the campaign forward.
Elisha London, CEO and founder of UGMH, said: “As a truly global bank, HSBC can help amplify the voice of those trying to break the silence. This will hopefully inspire other employers to prioritise mental health too.”
The partnership marks the latest step in HSBC’s increasing focus on mental health in recent years.
Last year, the bank hosted more than 75 events to mark World Mental Health Day. Employee networks have played a key role in organising these events, with some members sharing their experiences to help colleagues better understand and support those experiencing mental ill-health.
HSBC will also launch an education programme on mental health open to all employees later this year. It will offer guidance on how to spot the signs of poor mental health, start supportive conversations, and point people towards appropriate sources of help.
These could include HSBC’s local employee assistance programmes, which offer free and confidential counselling and help with issues including stress, anxiety, depression and bereavement.
