You were a hotel administrative operations coordinator before joining HSBC as a banking telesales representative. What prompted the career switch?

I wanted to pursue a career that offers a lot more stability, in terms of the work environment as well as career and financial prospects.

It’s been nearly 20 years since you made the switch. How far has it taken you?

It was a timely move that has gotten me to a good place over the years and I’m excited to see what’s ahead. Shortly after I joined HSBC as a telesales representative, I was promoted to Sales Representative, then Senior Sales Manager and I’m a Senior Team Manager now.

Most people worry that they are not cut out for a sales role. What’s your take?

One common concern I frequently encounter when interviewing potential team members is the statement, “I don’t think I can do sales.” However, that’s a self-imposed limitation as they haven’t given themselves the opportunity to experience it yet. How would they know if they won’t enjoy it?

Considering a career switch? I strongly encourage you to give sales at HSBC a try. The comprehensive training and attractive rewards system will set you up for success, like it has done for me

For me, the decision was clear-cut. Even if it didn’t pan out, I would gain valuable experience. Conversely, if it did succeed, I could unlock a promising career path. My recommendation is to fully commit for at least a year before concluding that sales just isn't for you. On the contrary, you might just surprise yourself!

Was the transition difficult?

The customer service skills I gained from my hotel position, the approach my father took with his clients in his grocery store, and my personal traits have all contributed to my smooth transition into sales roles. Communications and problem-solving skills are transferrable skills that HSBC values from career switchers. A positive attitude towards learnings and challenges are additional traits that can take you far. Together with the comprehensive onboard training from the bank, I remember it only took me two to three months to adjust to banking and sales.

Why should someone consider joining sales at HSBC?

On top of its exceptional training, HSBC is a global bank with an excellent reputation and a customer base that’s as diverse and inclusive as its work environment, which is great for sales. It is also a deeply fulfilling career when we can enhance our customers' experiences and brighten their day. We’re rewarded fairly and attractively according to our performance, which is a huge motivator too.
