Madhav Mindhe

Principal Engineer

Pune, India

I’m a technology enthusiast who enjoys building something from scratch. I get a lot of satisfaction when I can solve business challenges with technology and unlock real value with it. I’m lucky that I’ve been able to do that throughout my career, and the opportunity to work on complex business problems in a global context was one of the main reasons I joined HSBC in 2016.

Improving our productivity together

One of the projects I’ve been working on recently is building a single primary trading platform to optimise our architecture. As our bank grew and took over other businesses, we also took over their systems and applications which resulted in us having similar systems doing similar things. With a single platform, we can help our traders get the best possible prices and executions for their trades at a faster speed, which eventually creates a better experience for our customers.

I’m also passionate about improving developer productivity. I started an open-source group within HSBC where we build software to solve productivity problems that tech teams are facing on the ground. We have developers contributing from all over the world. One of the tools that we built to automate operations has been deployed to automate the entire SSL certificate management system, which is really fulfilling to see. We have also built the most popular change request automation platform and a solution to deploy production grade Kubernetes on on-premises servers.

As a Principal Engineer, I get the chance to remain hands-on with coding, doing various proof of concepts, as well as working on enterprise problems and collaborating with other teams across the bank. The principal engineering community also comes together to discuss anything related to engineering – from brainstorming new features to solving a technical problem to giving input on the best training and resources for our graduate hires.

We work together as a tech community, putting our heads together to address local or global challenges.

A nurturing culture for growth

There’s something I find particularly distinctive about HSBC – our people have a very strong sense of pride in who we are and what we do.

One possible reason for this is that we genuinely love our work in technology here. It really challenges us and stretches us. There are also many career development opportunities which allow each individual to play to their strengths. Whether we prefer to progress vertically into a leadership role or to stay in a technical role to hone our expertise laterally, there are clear career pathways and resources to support our growth.

Ultimately, HSBC is focused on building us up to be our best selves, and it shows in our people-centric policies. If you share my passion for technology, you will certainly enjoy your time here at HSBC.
