Krystal Ng
Corporate Banking Graduate
I’ve been working with HSBC for just over a year and a half now. I first discovered my passion for business and analytics during my time at the University of Edinburgh, where I majored in Business with Decision Analytics. It was a fascinating way to explore both business and finance while tackling real-world challenges, like figuring out the best way for Amazon to optimize its delivery routes. The variables, complexities, and problem-solving involved sparked my love for analytical thinking and business strategies. This interest naturally led me to banking, where I could apply these skills to impactful, real-world decisions.
Collaborating to create winning solutions
As a dual citizen, growing up in China, I was no stranger to HSBC. It’s a prominent name there, as well as in Scotland, where I studied. I’d attended several insight sessions with various organizations, but it was hearing the stories from HSBC that really captured my attention. The bank’s global presence, its diverse clients, and the opportunities to collaborate across teams inspired me to apply for their internship program in New York, where I was then offered a full-time role after graduating. Now, my role consists of supporting Relationship Managers who are the first point of contact for many of our multinational clients. Whether they’re looking to issue a bond or seeking advice on financial strategies, I bring my analytical skills to the table to assess everything from credit scores to loan requirements. While I don’t always do the ’heavy lifting’ on every project, it’s crucial to understand all aspects of the client’s needs. This enables me to have meaningful conversations with other teams and ensure we provide the best solutions.

Networking for success
Relationship building is just as important as the numbers, and part of my role is pulling together the right experts from within HSBC to guide our decisions. It’s a high-pressure environment, especially when deals involve millions of dollars, but the support of my team is invaluable. As I always say, “We’re all in it together.”
Networking has been a big part of my journey here. During my internship, I was particularly grateful for my peers, assigned buddy, and mentor as not only did they provide me with a lot of guidance, they also introduced me to a network of people around the bank. My advice to anyone joining HSBC would be to stay curious, dive into challenges, and build relationships across the bank. Getting to know people – both inside and outside of your immediate team – really makes a difference.
Teamwork beyond boundaries
Taking ‘responsibility’, ‘valuing difference’, and ‘getting things done’ are our core values, and they’re values I’ve always carried with me. Whether I’m working with clients or rowing with my 12-person HSBC Dragon Boat team, I know that collaboration and commitment are key to ‘succeeding together’.
Looking ahead, I’m excited about my future at HSBC. While I plan to spend a significant amount of time in the New York office, the bank’s global footprint offers unique opportunities.
