Isabella Zucaro
Global Markets Graduate
I’ve always been driven by a mix of my passions and practicality. I think that’s why I decided to study both Economics and Portuguese at college. Economics gave me real, practical options, while Portuguese indulged my curiosity about the world.
I joined HSBC as an intern in 2022 and almost instantly found a connection with the bank. I met so many great people and loved being able to use my language skills to work with colleagues in Chile, Brazil and Mexico. I was really struck by the global nature of the business. This level of international reach feels unique for an organization in America.
A whole new experience
I really wanted to return to HSBC when I graduated. So far, it’s been a steep learning curve, but a curve I’m enjoying. I’ve been able to network, meet even more colleagues around the world, and work closely with my official (and unofficial) mentors. Already the experience has been invaluable.

Right now, I’m working in Commodities, specifically precious metals like gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. The theory and skills I learned at college, like macroeconomics, are helping me tackle the work. Especially as understanding both local and geopolitics is vital. National trade policy, fiscal changes, market shifts, and geopolitical unrest all have an impact on the mining, buying, and selling of precious metals. And, of course, we’re dealing with many unknowns. So, I’m learning that preparation and leaning into the trusted voices of your network are just as crucial.
Making an impact, feeling the difference
The culture at HSBC means all voices are listened to. When I’ve had an idea or something to say, I’ve been able to collaborate with Relationship Managers to share it with our clients.
Working for a global bank means there’s a real buzz in the office too. You can see each team spring into life as different markets in different time zones open. It’s a dynamic environment to be part of.
Looking forward to future possibilities
I’m excited about my future here at HSBC. Because of its global nature and the strength in the market, I feel there are lots of opportunities ahead. I would love to visit teams in other places, to see how they do business and bring some of those ideas back here to New York.
My advice to any graduate joining HSBC is to make the most of every moment. Take advantage of every opportunity to shadow, be mentored by, network with, speak to and learn from those around you. Everyone you meet and everything you learn will stand you in good stead in the future.
