Francisco Gonzalez

Technology Engineering Graduate

I didn’t know much about HSBC until they visited my university campus. In talking to the team, I realised my passion for problem-solving and interest in technology could both be satisfied on their Technology programme. I didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted to do at that point, so I was excited to apply and join.

Automating processes and solving problems through technology is an opportunity to create real impact.

Making a visible difference

Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to take on a variety of roles that have challenged me and allowed me to grow. One of the projects I’m most proud of was optimising a time-consuming process for the bank. My team and I took a task that used to take a month and reduced it to just 20 minutes. It was a real team effort, involving brainstorming ideas, writing code, and co-screening to collaborate remotely. It took some late nights, but the result was incredibly rewarding.

I’ve also been involved in the development of a new project to process massive amounts of data. Using Java, APIs, and tools like Google Cloud Platform’s BigQuery, I programmed algorithms to perform calculations and optimised the code using multiprocessing and threading techniques. It’s exciting to know that the work I’m doing contributes directly to HSBC’s innovation.

A culture of collaboration and growth

One of the best things about working here is the people. I’ve built a network of colleagues – and friends – across the globe, from India to Hong Kong. Whether it’s through graduate events like wine tasting or day-to-day collaboration, I’ve found that everyone is approachable and willing to help. Even if someone doesn’t have the answer, they’ll connect you with someone who does.

HSBC’s open and welcoming culture encourages me to keep learning and trying new things. Just like I’ve taught myself to play the piano, guitar, and ukulele, I’ve been able to explore and grow in my career here. I love that I’m part of a team that shares my passion for innovation and solving problems.

I’m excited to see where my journey at HSBC will take me next. With so many opportunities to learn and contribute, I know I’ll continue to grow and make an impact in the future of finance and technology.
