As the Head of Engineering for several platforms in Digital Business Banking in Hong Kong, I work with hundreds of engineers in Hong Kong and our technology centres in mainland China to deliver innovative digital solutions to transform customer journeys.

Building customer-centric engineering solutions

At HSBC, we use technology to deliver better banking services and experiences for our customers. The business banking landscape is very competitive in Hong Kong, which creates a lot of opportunities for innovation. We work closely with the business teams to understand our customers, their needs and pain points, so we can build engineering solutions that help to improve their experience.

A great example of this is the first remote business account opening solution targeting small and medium enterprises that we launched in Hong Kong. Business account opening used to be quite a time-consuming process, and customers often had to make a few visits to our branches. With the remote account opening solution, business owners can open an account anytime and anywhere. The application process is completely digitised and paperless and we managed to cut the account opening process from weeks to days.

Championing a culture of collaboration

I am an inner source evangelist. Part of my goal of being a Principal Engineer is driving the culture of inner source at HSBC to improve our reusability and collaboration. I like to connect with other like-minded engineers and increase awareness of the inner source concept within the bank – we have built up a community which has around 500 engineers globally.

We host regular technical sharing sessions and establish small working groups to work on issues or projects, such as building toolkits or proof of concept. We share our knowledge, experience and best practices with other teams so we can increase efficiency across the bank instead of reinventing the wheel.

Having worked in technology for more than 20 years in different companies, HSBC stands out as an employer with global scale and the opportunities it creates. I’ve had different roles in several teams in my time here, which has allowed me to try different technologies and business domains.

I also appreciate our flexible working culture and our infrastructure that supports remote working and collaboration across global teams. As we strive to deliver digital-first banking to our customers, we continue to adopt new and emerging technologies to drive innovation. It’s an exciting time to work in technology at HSBC.
