Debbie Kao
Premier Sales Manager
Taiwan
Fresh from university graduation, I started out as a flight attendant to explore the world. Later, when I needed something more stable, HSBC was top of mind because banking is also an industry that requires serving customers from diverse backgrounds. Aside from being a renowned brand worldwide, HSBC’s international connectivity excites me as much as my airline career. But I was concerned my lack of experience would be an obstacle. Luckily, I did not let this worry stand in my way. I successfully found an opportunity in a newly opened branch that welcomed my background. I’ve been with HSBC for 26 years now and have really enjoyed my life in this big family.
A smooth transition from flight attendant to customer service in banking
My first role at HSBC was Bank Hall Customer Service Representative at the Tai Chung branch. HSBC is a renowned international bank in Taiwan and the preferred bank for many foreigners. Being able to speak English is a top skill in recruitment here so together with my international customer service experience, I got the job.
The bank provided comprehensive training, support and on-the-job guidance that made the transition easy. I also acquired diverse skills and experiences through job rotations in various roles, including Bank Hall VIP Lounge assistant, counter cashier and financial management specialist and business supervisor. There were also insightful training and briefing sessions in the sales team. This exposure enabled me to rapidly strengthen my banking knowledge for my customer service role while also expanding my understanding of the possibilities within a banking career.
Switching paths to become a Wealth Relationship Manager
While my performance in customer service was well recognised, I decided to move into a sales role for better career development. I was surprised when my line manager readily backed my aspirations and arranged a transfer for me to start as an Associate Premier Relationship Manager – the most junior level of Premier Relationship Manager. It’s a good example of how much HSBC values the potential of its people and helps them succeed through internal mobility. The bank also gave me a lot of support to obtain the necessary licenses by helping me plan out the training and exams to achieve this in the most efficient way.
From flight attendant to team head of Premier Relationship Managers, my career at HSBC is a journey of exciting transformations and possibilities
Advancing to team head in two years
Just in two years, I was promoted to Premier Sales Manager, which is second in rank to the Branch Manager. I’m also the Team Head of Premier Relationship Managers.
There are a few major reasons for my quick progression into a leadership role. Firstly, my job rotation experience in the branch allowed me to understand how best to coach and support colleagues in different functions. Next are the customer relationships I’ve built over the years. HSBC has a fair and clear career pathway and if you meet the promotion criteria, you will get there. Lastly, I truly enjoy the satisfaction of helping my customers arrive at solutions for their needs. I love a good challenge and to keep learning.
Any tips for those without banking experience who want to succeed in the industry?
Like me, you can gain banking and investment knowledge after joining the bank. HSBC has systematic and comprehensive onboarding training and skills development programmes, and it also provides exam subsidies to help you upgrade your qualifications. You will also have the support of our products and operations experts, who are very willing to help you. Most importantly, you must like interacting with people and be eager to learn new things and to broaden your horizons.
