Tell us about your career trajectory from a fresh graduate to Head of Business Development and Sales.
I joined HSBC in 2007 as a Mortgage Sales Officer, drawn by its prestige as a leading international bank and the career progression opportunities for newcomers. Within five years, I was promoted to the Mortgage Team Lead, subsequently to a Branch Manager, eventually becoming the Regional Manager for East Malaysia. In 2022, I took on the role of the Country Head of Wealth Sales. With the bank having an intention to grow its business further in Malaysia, my current role was put in place in 2024 and I’m now leading 150 sales professionals, focusing on customer acquisition for all asset businesses, including credit card and mortgage services.
Why is this an exciting time to join you here?
HSBC aims to be the leading foreign bank in Malaysia within the next few years, and Business Development and Sales plays a key role in achieving this goal. Our business is growing rapidly and I’m expanding the team in all areas, especially in finance, sales, and business development.
Who would thrive in this environment?
People who are outgoing, results-oriented, good at collaborating with others and can go the extra mile.
We learn from one another and grow together, these are the hallmarks of HSBC’s culture and values
What’s your leadership style?
There’s one belief I’ve been practicing as a manager for the past 16 years, and that is to lead by trust. I believe in being transparent with my team, to ensure that we are all aligned with our shared objectives. I’m also approachable and flexible, encouraging my team to work with me in problem-solving the matter at hand together, trusting that there’ll be no blame game and that we’ll work on the solution as a team. These are also valuable training and mentoring opportunities to elevate their problem-solving skills and take them to the next level.
How can early-career talents thrive at HSBC?
Firstly, don’t jump ship too quickly. Give it your all and focus on self-improvement for one to two years before deciding if the bank, your team and a particular role is right for you. At the same time, work on building an impressive personal brand. Grow your internal and external network, be agile in adapting to situations and be proactive in seeking feedback and even mentorship — from peers to senior management.
What’s one personal tip you’d love to share?
Being around people who love their work is crucial for growth. We learn from one another and progress together, it’s the hallmark of HSBC’s culture and values. It keeps the energy and motivation high, both as a team and as an individual.
